Packaging: Carlsberg set to replace glass bottles with PET

Fri, 5 Aug 2011

Beer company Carlsberg is to use a new 500ml PET bottle for its Carlsberg Export lager.

According to Packaging Digest, the beer will replace glass bottles in an exclusive launch for Sainsbury’s Local stores.

Technical problems have made using PET for beer difficult, but Carlsberg has now overcome the limitations and will be seen as a first step to wider use of PET in the beer sector.

The bottle will have a traditional metal crown cap rather than a plastic screw cap. The move follows M&S’ decision to convert its entire range of 25cl wine bottles to PET.
