WEEE: Major fire at Surrey printer cartridge recycling plant

Tue, 4 Oct 2011

A huge explosion has severely damaged a factory that recycles toner cartridges in Surrey.

Gas canisters exploded at the eReco facility near to Lingfield injuring eight people, with four of them seriously injured. What caused the explosion is not known.

At the height of the fire, 12 fire engines from Surrey and East and West Sussex were fighting the blaze. The Environment Agency has also been involved after it emerged that there has been a run-off of water used to dampen the flames.

The eReco facility only opened in May last year and its clients include Conon, Konica Minolta, IKON, Ricoh, Oce and Sharp.

The company also deals with B2B recycling of WEEE and is an approved authorised treatment facility.
